11-29-04: Both page sponsership offers have been improved

Sponser your favorite page on-site! and Choose which site pages are updated! have both been updated. Now page sponsers also get a relatively substantial text ad option too. I've tried to make our text ads both distinctive and flexible compared to others. I would have included this sooner but it just took time to work out the logistics.

11-23-04: The Shadowfast's end story and a super car project concept page are both updated with new graphics

Basically I found a third photo of Shadowfast in my continuing search and added it to the pages, along with some relevant comments. The new photo jogged some new outlaw driving memories too, which I have included in the concept page (these may need to be moved to a more appropriate page later).

10-4-04 WebFLUX Alert for possible $100,000 windfall

I personally made it a point to register to vote around a month ago. I'm champing at the bit to vote ASAP: likely absentee, since I can do that sooner.

Voting for Bush or not voting at all is a vote for the status quo, by definition. Voting for Nader is too, due to the fact something so extraordinary as to be a historic first would have to occur for him to win.

So if you want change, you've got to vote, and you've got to vote for Kerry. Granted, if he wins we'll probably only get a little change (not nearly as much as many would like). And he's not the most charming person in the world, by a long shot. But he'd have a hard time displacing Bush as the worst President in US history.

If you're a US citizen AND resident you can enter to win $100,000 in a promotion encouraging Americans to vote in the upcoming election.

To enter CLICK HERE. This is a referral link that will enter you into the contest, plus give me an entry too for referring you to the site (we could each of us win $100,000: that's $100,000 for YOU and a different $100,000 for ME).

Good luck to us both!

10-3-04 WebFLUX Alert for humanity: An ominous cluster of scientific reports on possible links between global warming and re-emerging 'X-files' type diseases from prehistoric times has come to my attention the past year UPDATED

There may also be a link here to the mystery of the massive mega fauna extinctions worldwide during the last major ice melts. That's when a great many beasts larger than a certain size, both plant eaters and meat eaters, inexplicably went extinct overnight in evolutionary terms. As this occured at around the same time humanity was spreading and multiplying into new areas of the globe, as well as developing devastating new hunting weaponry, scientists continue to debate whether it was climate change, humanity, or some sort of plague alone which killed off all these species, or some combination of these things.

The latest reports are raising the specter of plagues being freed from melting ice having a larger impact than previously thought.

-- Ice as a reservoir for pathogenic human viruses: specifically, caliciviruses, influenza viruses, and enteroviruses by Alvin W. Smitha, Douglas E. Skillinga, John D. Castellob and Scott O. Rogers; Medical Hypotheses Volume 63, Issue 4 , 2004, Pages 560-566; doi:10.1016/j.mehy.2004.05.011; Accessible online 17 July 2004

I've got quite a few references about all this socked away for later, more comprehensive write ups: here I'm providing just a small sample. Below is but one of many reports about ice around the world melting even faster than many global warming scientists themselves expected.

-- Yahoo! News - Antarctic Glaciers Melting Faster -Study By Maggie Fox; Reuters; Oct 03, 2004

-- Yahoo! News - Global Warming Effects Faster Than Feared - Experts By Maggie Fox; Oct 29, 2004; Reuters

One last point: It could be that humanity too suffered a substantial die off around the same time as the mega fauna worldwide, according to the bottlenecks being found in the human genetic record. One implication of this is that north america might have had a somewhat larger human population prior to the megafauna extinction than we today suspect. Other factors here include civilization building and the domestication of animals. For widespread domestication and civilization building developments also contribute mightily to the emergence and spread of new plagues. If early American populations swelled at the same time they were widely domesticating certain animals as well as forming civilizations, a plague could have decimated them and the mega-fauna at the same time, greatly reducing the native population of north america, as well as setting them back civilization and technology-wise to make them easy victims for later European explorers. The Europeans of course enjoyed a bit more protection from new diseases due to their longer exposure to similar vectors in Eurasia over millennia (The Jared Diamond effect).

-- HEALTH OF AMERICAN INDIANS ON DECLINE BEFORE COLUMBUS ARRIVED IN NEW WORLD by Holly Wagner, (614) 292-8310; Wagner.235@osu.edu; Contact: Richard Steckel, Steckel.1@osu.edu

10-29-04 UPDATE: But just how might an ancient scourge thawed out from the ice rapidly spread to animals and human beings? Insects.

-- Insects implicated in the evolution of new human infectious diseases possibly by Andrew McLaughlin; University of Bath Press Office, 01225 386 883 or 07966 341 357; 25 October 2004; bath.ac.uk

END UPDATE.

9-8-04: WebFLUX Alert: The health risks of insufficient darkness in your life

I bet that one sounds weird to you, right? Especially since so much writing out there today (mine included) often equates 'darkness' with 'bad'. It's a metaphor gone wild.

But there's mounting evidence that human health goes seriously out of whack if it doesn't get enough darkness in its nightly routine. I've got oodles of references on the subject I plan to add to More ways to guard your health and attend to basic medical needs for very, very low cost but the latest one seems especially significant.

For lack of adequate darkness can actually contribute to cancer in kids as young as five(!) Gadzooks! If something about our daily life ration can affect youngsters that seriously-- and that quickly-- after they're out of the womb, then it looks to be a far bigger problem than anyone has suspected until now.
